A young Uyghur shepherd carries his lunch of bread on a stick over his shoulder in the Taklimakan Desert. More than half of Uyghur region, home to the Taklimakan, is Uyghur, an ethnic minority of mixed Turkish decent which ruled northern Mongolia in the 7th and 8th centuries. Roughly translated, Taklimakan means "if you go in, you don't come out". |

An Uyghur Elder

The region in general and Tuyoq in particular is well known for its grapes which are picked and dried by hand as they were in Marco Polo's time.
